This is focused on Operation OVERLORD, an amphibious landing operation to secure the beaches in Normandy. code-named Operation OVERLORD.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second event which follows on from one started in June 2023 to commemorate the 79th and 80th anniversaries of the airborne assault at Pegasus Bridge and DDay landings at SWORD beach.<\/p>\n<p>The swim will depart Portsmouth using a crewed safety boat as a guide. The soldiers and officers who stormed the beaches on DDay faced unimaginable challenges and risks, enduring perilous conditions, and intense combat to secure a foothold in Europe and bring an end to World War II. There was a significant amount of risk in Operation OVERLORD; for those involved to get it right, and for the continued fight through to liberate France.<\/p>\n<p>In swimming the English Channel, I am symbolically replicating the strenuous and formidable conditions that those military personnel encountered during the DDay invasion. My endeavour pays tribute to their resilience, determination, and bravery, underscoring the enduring significance of their actions in shaping history and preserving freedom. He remains actively involved in veteran networks supporting those transitioning from the Forces and seeking employment in Finance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo mark such a significant anniversary of DDay I wanted to do something no one had ever done before. So why not swim the route they traveled all those years ago. Hardly stopped to rest at all today but maybe I should have as was very sore when I pulled over.\nI missed an obvious track and thought the one I took was correct until I was on my hands and knees trying to get up what must have been a dried upstream from a cliff. It was the most dangerous thing I\u2019ve done less than fall off a mountain in Austria but it got to a point where it was even more unsafe to have stopped and come back down.\nI came out covered in cuts and splinters and exhausted. When I got to the top I had missed the path in quite some way; I\u2019d argue I was the first person ever to have done that climb. Especially with a backpack. I would rather skip that challenge and have hit the track!\nNearly stepped on a snake (danger noodle) also. Luckily I spotted it and it curled into a ball before heading into the brush. An Adder bite is the last thing I need out here.\nI eventually got close to the road and took the opportunity to speed. Noticed a sign saying the finish was in 47 miles wish it said 5 miles!\nFound a water tap and recovered a bit. My Garmin watch is still panicking and every day has warned me of high activity, you&#039;d think it would have adjusted by now. I&#039;ve noticed though when I rest for a few minutes it takes a while to get up and walk pain-free.\n\nHowever I&#039;ve really enjoyed the day so far; no wet stuff from the sky, the sun was out but not beaming down. Motorways, cars, roads, pavements. Everyone was staring at me weird as I was walking through the suburbs and even the pigeons gave me odd looks through some areas.\n\nIn terms of admin, I had the rain from 0700 all the way through to 1300. My shoes have split so lots of nice Scottish rain got in, my tent absorbed a lot during the day so had to hammock it tonight to let it breathe. Worst of all my battery pack has ingested water or something so that no longer works and my phone also so I\u2019m on my last 20% until I find a socket. No Classic FM for me then on Bluetooth. I mean I could go from Pub to Pub to Pub to charge up but I\u2019m not sure I\u2019d make John O\u2019Groats this quarter if I choose that route; not saying no though.\n\nI had a visit today from a professional photographer (Gavin Forster) who shoots explorers (god knows why he chose to track me down). Took some good pictures and he was conscious not to hold me up.\n\nHeading for Stirling tomorrow as I have to fix these issues or at the very least recharge everything. Everything is slowly falling apart.\n\nToday was the first day I actually missed material things; I put this down to there only really being houses and roads and cars to stare at. I miss the fields and the trees. it\u2019s worn away and takes you a day or so inland.\n\nGoogle Earth saved my journey by highlighting a rail crossing (you can see in one of the pictures) which I then had a long hike to get to avoid traffic. I was pretty fed up by the time I reached the railway.\n\nThen\u2026.. my phone glitched and kept calling the emergency services, I think the solar panel tripped it, essentially the screen would no longer work for about 3hrs or so I was hoping the battery would drain. When I got into the next town I was shown how to reset it which brought it back to life. However, somehow their dingy decided to park underneath their boat at low tide so they were stuck until they could wedge it out. It was too dangerous for what I was carrying for the challenge. The swells are brutal and there\u2019s no help out there; I had made the right choice.\n\nI made it to Wales around 1730 and trekked out north to escape civilisation.
