The last update from George!! - 17th May - Reachin The last update from George!! - 17th May - Reaching John O' Groats

" After 875 odd miles, lots of mishaps, tons of problems and a bunch of adaptations, I've proved you can get from Lands End to John O’Groats in a straight line unsupported (solo).

It's been an incredible journey, I've experienced some of the best hospitality and locations the British Isles have to offer.

I've had some incredible, beautiful moments in nature. I've had some awful dark times climbing, slipping, tripping and getting soaked.

Thank you to everyone who donated; thank you to everyone who messaged or called throughout as it made the miles easier. My girlfriend who has been there all day every day for the last two months on this journey and my family for their support and helping out with the logistics.

Solo Beeline Britain completed; now for a well-needed shower, beer, sleep and to figure out the way home!

Keep your eyes on the BBC, The Times and maybe Good Morning Britain to see the journey again.

Been a blast. Been Hell. Good luck to the next who attempts it. "

Update from George - 15th May "Hell of a day. Ver Update from George - 15th May

"Hell of a day.
Very sore but have come a long way since April so I imagine my body is getting excited that the end is in sight. Hardly stopped to rest at all today but maybe I should have as was very sore when I pulled over.
I missed an obvious track and thought the one I took was correct until I was on my hands and knees trying to get up what must have been a dried upstream from a cliff. It was the most dangerous thing I’ve done less than fall off a mountain in Austria but it got to a point where it was even more unsafe to have stopped and come back down.
I came out covered in cuts and splinters and exhausted. When I got to the top I had missed the path in quite some way; I’d argue I was the first person ever to have done that climb. Especially with a backpack. I would rather skip that challenge and have hit the track!
Nearly stepped on a snake (danger noodle) also. Luckily I spotted it and it curled into a ball before heading into the brush. An Adder bite is the last thing I need out here.
I eventually got close to the road and took the opportunity to speed. Noticed a sign saying the finish was in 47 miles wish it said 5 miles!
Found a water tap and recovered a bit. The weather has been nice today but the sun disappeared after 1600.
Not long left."

Update from George - 9th May The only thing to s Update from George - 9th May

The only thing to say is that today was tough.

The rain started at 0700 and didn't stop until 1900.

I also had to tackle the mountains south of the Cairngorms and it was not the right conditions for it... at all.

Take steep inclines, rabbit paths (not even sheep paths) and walking over 13 hours through low lying clouds, rain with shoes that have split; also sprinkle some winds strong enough to push me about (I may have lost weight?!!) and add my body starting to present injuries rather than hide them... to

However not all bad news; I woke up on the beeline and 6hrs later hit it again before turning west. I couldn't justify heading north to another mountain in the condition my kit and I was in.

Made to Kenmore for 1930. Can't wait for bed; going to push north after I dry out. Would love to come back, very pretty here.
Update from George - 8th May Another hard slog bu Update from George - 8th May

Another hard slog but slowly getting there.

This area around Stirling is beautiful and reminds me of Somerset (where I'm from) although significantly fewer hills in the Mendips!!

This post is early as I'm about to walk through some valleys and the sun is going down so no idea if my battery and signal will hold over the next two days. My Garmin watch is still panicking and every day has warned me of high activity, you'd think it would have adjusted by now. I've noticed though when I rest for a few minutes it takes a while to get up and walk pain-free.

However I've really enjoyed the day so far; no wet stuff from the sky, the sun was out but not beaming down. Everything seems happy and also I love the scenery here.

If I had to repeat this challenge I wouldn't change today less than having a working battery pack!!
Update from George - 6th May So happy that this Update from George - 6th May

So happy that this day is over.

The worst part really of the whole journey. Motorways, cars, roads, pavements. Everyone was staring at me weird as I was walking through the suburbs and even the pigeons gave me odd looks through some areas.

In terms of admin, I had the rain from 0700 all the way through to 1300. My shoes have split so lots of nice Scottish rain got in, my tent absorbed a lot during the day so had to hammock it tonight to let it breathe. Worst of all my battery pack has ingested water or something so that no longer works and my phone also so I’m on my last 20% until I find a socket. No Classic FM for me then on Bluetooth. I mean I could go from Pub to Pub to Pub to charge up but I’m not sure I’d make John O’Groats this quarter if I choose that route; not saying no though.

I had a visit today from a professional photographer (Gavin Forster) who shoots explorers (god knows why he chose to track me down). Took some good pictures and he was conscious not to hold me up.

Heading for Stirling tomorrow as I have to fix these issues or at the very least recharge everything. Everything is slowly falling apart.

Today was the first day I actually missed material things; I put this down to there only really being houses and roads and cars to stare at. I miss the fields and the trees. I am thankful that there were minimal hills though and happy with the pace.

Update from George - 6th May "Made it across just Update from George - 6th May

"Made it across just before lunch and started again on foot (nervous about how much I have left to do)

My aim is to get to Glasgow within the weekend and then aim for the Cairngorms. If I can keep the pace I did in Wales I should be ok.

The area is very pretty and the Loch’s are charming. The midges and mosquitoes are tough to battle though."

Update from George - 3rd May "Done… finally ma Update from George - 3rd May

"Done… finally made it to the Isle of Man!

Completely wrecked and tired but worth every penny. Mainly due to the company and charity of the Conway Bay Sailing Club who kept me company and also showed me what it takes to sail across the vast amount of water we have in the UK. I learned two new knots which I quickly applied to the Club mascot; turning it into a figurehead for the yacht Diego.

I’m hopeful for a crossing to Scotland; it needs to be soon.

I will miss Wales, to be honest; beautiful country and great times.

Confident Scotland will be the same."
Update from George - 30th April "Made it to the Update from George - 30th April

"Made it to the Marina and met with Nigel who offered to take me across to the Isle of Man.
I soon realised that I’m not sure that I’ll be feeling ill from the journey or the copious amount of alcohol that is on board.
I’ll take a gin or two after three weeks of walking!!!
I’ll let you know which is worse; sea or spirits."

Update from George - 25th April A good day of re Update from George - 25th April

A good day of relaxation and reflection. Made it within 10 miles of Caernarfon which is all I could do, to be honest as I prioritised rest.

I will get to Caernarfon and search for ways across the Menai Strait; hoping not to have to go east that much.

Keen to get to Holyhead but if I can find a crossing to the Isle of Man from around here… then better!!

UPDATE FROM GEORGE - 22nd APRIL "Been a great day UPDATE FROM GEORGE - 22nd APRIL

"Been a great day for many reasons but first and foremost thank you to all of you for getting this challenge (the donations) past halfway; it is also around halfway on the ground so it’s fitting!

Some beautiful coastline and today didn’t have epic detours inland or phone failures so a steady day.

Working towards a rest tomorrow (1 in 7) will pitch up around Harlech to push onto Caernarfon after some TLC on myself and my kit.

The backpack is hanging in there however both shoes have split across the top corner, they’ve done well though nearly 300miles plus all the training; I think they’re just wearing in!!!"
UPDATE FROM GEORGE - 21st April "What can I say; UPDATE FROM GEORGE - 21st April

"What can I say; you had to be there.

Helped along today by a great community both in Wales and visitors.

I had pushed into Aberystwyth and had a sense of achievement until I realised you can’t get across the bay via the coastal path; it’s worn away and takes you a day or so inland.

Google Earth saved my journey by highlighting a rail crossing (you can see in one of the pictures) which I then had a long hike to get to avoid traffic. I was pretty fed up by the time I reached the railway.

Then….. my phone glitched and kept calling the emergency services, I think the solar panel tripped it, essentially the screen would no longer work for about 3hrs or so I was hoping the battery would drain. When I got into the next town I was shown how to reset it which brought it back to life. It wasn’t as simple as the power+volume button as I just called the police!

Had a beer to celebrate and pushed on past a golf course to settle in; pretty setting.

Very annoying day with some great support from everyone involved. Thanks for all your help if you’re reading this."
UPDATE FROM GEORGE - 21st APRIL😄 "Saw the sea UPDATE FROM GEORGE - 21st APRIL😄

"Saw the sea today which was a big boost; although I was still an hour or so from the coast.
I’ve noticed in Wales that signs don’t have distances on them which is good and bad. Helps to know how close you are but also so you don’t get upset when you think you’ve done 5 miles and in fact, you did 2!!
In Aberystwyth for lunch; will slow down as not sure where to cross yet; Bangor or Holyhead so no point thrashing myself now to be sent the wrong way.
The pack is starting to annoy me, the fact the right strap has snapped again is putting strain on my shoulder, frustrating to say the least. Also got soaked yesterday crossing rivers so cautious about my shoes and foot admin.
Was a good day though and enjoyed crossing fields and rivers rather than pacing down a road. Really like the Welsh valleys; very pretty and not so arduous as the coasts."

UPDATE FROM GEORGE - 20TH APRIL "What an epic day UPDATE FROM GEORGE - 20TH APRIL

"What an epic day. 😄

George the Harbour Master at Ilfracombe had perused two of the kindest people to take me across; Chris and Lillian. However, somehow their dingy decided to park underneath their boat at low tide so they were stuck until they could wedge it out. However, Frasier, a travelling doctor was leaving at the same time so he took me across on the proviso I was the helmsman for the most part.

After 3/4 hours to sea, I soon realised how I wouldn’t have been able to cross in a kayak. It was too dangerous for what I was carrying for the challenge. The swells are brutal and there’s no help out there; I had made the right choice.

I made it to Wales around 1730 and trekked out north to escape civilisation. Even when I set up the tent I felt seasick and still wobbling like it was in open water, I pray it goes tomorrow.

None of this would have been possible without the help of these people combined so I must from the bottom of my heart thank them for keeping this challenge alive."

A recent update from George! - 13th April 2022 "T A recent update from George! - 13th April 2022

"Today was a slog but well worth it. I came across Dave the Travelling Cat 🐈 who I met north of Mawgan Porth. He’d come from Minehead so a long way for a cat!

I was asked to scope surf locations for my friend Beth which gave my mind something to do as I passed all the beaches towards Padstow. Lots of choices.

As I got to Treyarnon the rain came in and continued through the day. The path however was beautiful and it was relatively easy compared to previous days.

I got into Padstow and rushed down to the harbour to catch the ferry across to Rock. Had I’d missed it I would have to stray well off the Beeline to rejoin on the other side.
Likely adding half a day; I got caught out at St Ives a few days back and had to circle around Hayle to get back on the route; I was lucky today.

I managed to hit Polzeath before 1900hrs and tucked away in a woodblock just south so I was out the way.

Pray it doesn’t rain too much today. Then back on the route to work towards Tintagel."
