SWORD Beach Swim
The charity swim event will simulate an arduous military-style physical swim from Selsy, Portsmouth to SWORD Beach, Lion-sur-Mer. This is focused on Operation OVERLORD, an amphibious landing operation to secure the beaches in Normandy. The swim was originally to be conducted at a steady pace in relay using a support boat to accommodate and administrate the swimmers, but this was ultimately completed as a solo swim!
80 Nautical Miles
About The Challenge
This expedition aims to pay homage to the amphibious assault on occupied Normandy by Allied forces in World War 2, known as the DDay landings; code-named Operation OVERLORD.
This is the second event which follows on from one started in June 2023 to commemorate the 79th and 80th anniversaries of the airborne assault at Pegasus Bridge and DDay landings at SWORD beach.
The swim will depart Portsmouth using a crewed safety boat as a guide. Swimming in relay for 80 nautical miles the team will arrive in Normandy at SWORD beach within 5 days.
The aim is to raise donations and awareness for several charities that support and care for service personnel and veterans.
Thoughts From The Organiser
My decision to swim the English Channel from Portsmouth to Normandy in support of DDay 80 involves a deep connection to military history and connection with Lion-sur-Mer, and a profound respect for the sacrifices made by the soldiers and officers who landed on DDay.
SWORD Swim is a challenging physical endeavour that aims to mirror the daunting nature of the military action undertaken during DDay.
By embarking on this swim, I am honouring the immense courage and sacrifice displayed by the Allied forces during the Normandy landings. The soldiers and officers who stormed the beaches on DDay faced unimaginable challenges and risks, enduring perilous conditions, and intense combat to secure a foothold in Europe and bring an end to World War II. There was a significant amount of risk in Operation OVERLORD; for those involved to get it right, and for the continued fight through to liberate France.
In swimming the English Channel, I am symbolically replicating the strenuous and formidable conditions that those military personnel encountered during the DDay invasion. My endeavour pays tribute to their resilience, determination, and bravery, underscoring the enduring significance of their actions in shaping history and preserving freedom. It is a profound way to commemorate the sacrifices of those who fought on DDay and to contribute to the legacy of their extraordinary achievements.
Please bear in mind that anything could happen along this journey, but ‘by hook or by crook’ we will not let the communities of France down and be there to celebrate DDay 80.

“To mark such a significant anniversary of DDay I wanted to do something no one had ever done before. So why not swim the route they traveled all those years ago. We owe so much to all those who took part in the Allied invasion and hopefully by completing this challenge and raising money for veterans we can in some small way show our appreciation.”
